Designer Borge Mogensen

Product Description

Back in 1945, the post-war optimism of WW2 ushered in new opportunities for designers to re-envision a fresh future. Denmark had already established itself as a platform for rising stars to showcase their ideas, with the annual exhibition by the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild. Mogensen and Wegner joined forces increasing their idea of “A Home for the Future”. They transformed their stand into a living room, where Mogensen presented a hybrid of a daybed and a chaise longue, with a hinged side. While the Spoke-Back Sofa was acclaimed for its innovative approach, it was considered too sophisticated for post-war tastes. It wasn’t until 1963 that the sofa was put into industrial production. Exemplifying Mogensen's idea of a multi-purpose sofa.

The centerpiece of Mogensen and Wegner’s stand was the living room, in which they presented a new vision for lightweight and functional furniture. Even though the Spoke-back series was acclaimed for its innovation, it was also regarded as too sophisticated for the modest post-war culture, and the Spoke-back sofa did not go into production until 1963. In 1974 Wegner redesigned the 1788 easy chair to arrive at the current design.

The Spoke-back Sofa materializes Mogensen’s idea of a sofa with a reclining side and it was originally exhibited without back cushions. Hans J. Wegner’s spoke-back chair provides a comfortable seat with beautiful profiling in the armrests that reveals Wegner’s sculptural talents.
